This course is designed for those with no experience of winter mountaineering, who want to learn the fundamental skills needed to walk or climb safely in Scotland in winter. This course is not designed to achieve the same level of skill and competence as the full Introductory Winter Mountaineering course as there is not the same amount of time. However, students should come away having mastered the essential skills of cramponing, ice axe arrests and avalanche awareness, as well as having practised safe movement over steep ground. The course is also excellent technical preparation for participation in overseas expeditions graded 1, such as Kilimanjaro and Stok Kangri. The Introductory Long Weekend involves three days of intensive training, covering the basics of safe movement and climbing in the Scottish hills. The course begins at 6 p.m. on Friday evening starting with the Course Briefing. The briefing covers essential information for the weekend ahead. We will issue any hire kit and discuss equipment for the following day. Days 2 and 3 are similar to those of the Introductory Course, with the emphasis on safety and how to travel confidently and efficiently on steep ground. The last day is spent on a longer mountain route or attempting some harder but more accessible climbing, such as Broad Gully in Glencoe or Number 4 Gully on Ben Nevis.
Equipment LoanThe course price includes use of Crampons, Ice axe, Helmet and Harness if booked in advance. A comprehensive equipment list is included in the course Joining Instructions, which you receive upon booking.
