Based in the Brenta Dolomites, this course undertakes one of the finest mountain journeys in the Alps. The Via delle Bocchetta (The Bocchette Way) is comparable in quality to the classic Chamonix to Zermatt 'Haute Route'.

The course involves a hut-to-hut traverse of the main Brenta group, taking in at least six or seven high mountain Via Ferratas amidst some of the most spectacular rock scenery in the Alps.

Nowhere are the individual routes technically very difficult, but they are of alpine proportions in as much as they encounter very high traverses along very narrow ledges with huge drops, ladders, cables, snow and glacier crossings. There is also a greater threat of bad weather consistent with the high mountain environment.

The course is flexible and it allows for the vagaries of the weather, as there are many low level variations en route. However, our aim is to traverse the main Brenta group from North to South.

The Bocchette Way is suitable for strong walkers and those who have had some previous experience of Via Ferrata, pitched rock climbing, grade 3 scrambling or have attended our Via Ferrata Introduction Course in Cortina.

Course start point: Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Day 1:Saturday.
Course participants should arrive Rifugio Vallesinella by 6pm. Once at the hut, we are met by our guides for the week. Either before or possibly after dinner, there will be a briefing on the week’s activities, with essential information on equipment, clothing, safety and the weather forecast! Any unnecessary equipment (clothing used for travel for example) can be left at the hut, safely awaiting our return.
Day 2:Sunday.
After an equipment check, we set out from the Rifugio Vallesinella, emerging above the tree-line to a glimpse of our week’s objectives and to begin the first leg of the magical round of The Brenta Group. We will take Sentiero Sosat, a protected way that gives us a taste of all the Via Ferrate ingredients – cables, a few ladders, a little scrambling and lots of air. A walk of about 4hrs to the Rifugio Tuckett sets the flavour of our tour.
Day 3:Monday.
Rifugio Tuckett to Rifugio Alimonta (approx 5hrs). A typical Brenta day beginning on snow up the Vedretta di Tuckett giving access to the via Sentiero della Bochette Alte which cuts across the east wall of Cima Brenta. There is the option of descending the bold and airy Sentiero Detassis to the hut.
Day 4:Tuesday.
Rifugio Alimonta to Rifugio Pedrotti via Sentiero della Bochette Central (approx 5hrs). The day that takes us along the ledge system featured in the film Cliffhanger and directly under the inspiring tower Campanile Basso.
Day 5:Wednesday.
Rifugio Pedrotti to Rifugio XII Apostles via Sentiero Brentari (3/4 hours) and the Via Sentiero Castiglioni (2½ hours). A day of changing vistas begins by circumventing Cima Tosa, the highest summit in the group. A descent on snow of the small Vedretta under the soaring wall of Cima d’Ambiez leads to the Agostini Hut and lunch. A second course of ladders with 300 rungs through improbable terrain leads to a relaxed descent to the excellent Rifugio XII Apostles.
Day 6:Thursday.
Rifugio Twelve Apostles to Rifugio Casinei via Sentiero Martinazzi. We follow the Sentiero delle Ideale up and out onto the glacier Vedretta dei Camosci which we descend to the Brenta Alta. From here we have two options, climb the zigzag trail to the Rifugio Brentei or continue the descent into the little frequented and picturesque Val Brenta. Either route takes us to the good food of Rifugio Casinei. (4-5½ hours)
Day 7:Friday.
Rifugio Casinei to Rifugio Vallesinella. An intentionally short day to give us some flexibility in the itinerary in event of poor weather during the week. We make a short descent, which completes the circle at the Rifugio Vallesinella.
Day 8:Saturday.
Dispersal. Breakfast is provided on the last morning before participants leave the course.
